How Can I Reduce or Eliminate My Electric Bill?

Question by : How Can I Reduce or Eliminate My Electric Bill?
My family’s electric bill is out of control.

We are on a very tight budget.

Other than doing the obvious “conserve energy” stuff, is there a way to substantially reduce or eleminate our electric bill?

Doubtfully but maybe. In my experience at most they may let you pay the majority of the bill up front and defer the rest only until the next bill. If you’re lucky.

Q&A: Are you willing to pay an extra 30-40% on your electric bill if it’s 100% renewable energy?

Question by james: Are you willing to pay an extra 30-40% on your electric bill if it’s 100% renewable energy?
I am moving to Dallas, and in Dallas they have like 20 different electric companies and some offer 100% renewable energy such as Green Mountain. I come to the conclusion that the cost is about 30-40% more than ones who don’t use renewable energy. Do you think paying the difference is worth it?

Best answer:

Answer by Dawei
I don’t know if I’d do that, 40% if kind of steep. It shouldn’t be an all or nothing thing though; ask the company if you can just pay to have like 25% or so come from renewables. That’s what I do.

Tips to save on electric bill?

Question by Rose: Tips to save on electric bill?
We live in a 900 something sq ft condo. It was built in 1970, so undoubtedly the insulation probably isn’t modernized. We have recently seen a significant increase in our electric bill (its about 150 now). I understand its the summer and that I live in Houston.. But I don’t see that as an excuse. My husband found black mold in the radiator/compressor of our ac (inside in the hallway in a door thing). We also had a filthy air filter which we remembered to replace. What are some better ways of conserving energy? We viewed the tips on Reliant.com (whom we have our light bill/energy from) and did a few of them, but some do not apply to us.

Any other tips to get this stinkin’ bill down?
We have the part wind, “money saving” plan where we have a contract.. btw.
My husband refuses to “be uncomfortable in his own home”, so he won’t let the ac go above 75.

Can Reliant energy sell your house if you owe a light bill?

Question by sara r: Can Reliant energy sell your house if you owe a light bill?
I have a neighbor who says that a man came upnto her door and he said that he just had bought her house, to harris county because she owed $ 10,000dl to Reliant Energy.

Best answer:

Answer by Bill
No they can not get ownership of her house but they can place a lien against the property and would be in line to paid first if she sold the property. I doubt that Reliant would keep her electricity on long enough for her to run up a $ 10K bill. The utility companies usually shut off service when you are 60-90 days behind in making payments.

Anyone else have their Amigo Energy bill more than double in the last 3 months?

Question by Andy S: Anyone else have their Amigo Energy bill more than double in the last 3 months?
In March, our rate was 11 cents per kilowatt hour. In June, it jumped up to 24 cents. Told them to put down the crack pipe and switched providers. We had been with them for 2 years and other than an occasional billing issue (no bill received or payment lost in their online payment system), we were fairly pleased.

Best answer:

Answer by hsrch
I have heard comments from Amigo customers regarding their variable rate contracts. Amigo may be OK as a fixed-rate provider but not a a variable-rate one.
